La Ilustración Artística was a "weekly newspaper of literature, arts and sciences" edited by Montaner y Simón, whose printing house specialized in luxury illustrated publications since 1868. It included illustrations, first with woodcuts or galvanotypes and later with photoengravings and photographs.

A draftsman and painter, Pellicer trained with Ramón Martí Alsina, later completing his studies in Rome. He combined painting with graphic production dedicated to press publications, and also illustrated novels and made political cartoons. He was also a war chronicler and correspondent for several illustrated publications, such as the French "Le Monde Illustré". He was appointed member of the Academy of Fine Arts of Barcelona in 1894. He is represented in the Prado Museum (work on deposit at the MACBA) and in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, among other collections.
