As a young man, Schnee made a drawing of the funeral monument of Heinrich von Kleist, located at the Kleiner Wannsee Lake, for Theodor Storm. In Düsseldorf he was a pupil of Oswald Achenbach and Hans Fredrik Gude. In 1863 he moved to Karlsruhe and, after 1867, opened a studio in Berlin. He participated in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1895 with six paintings. Schnee lived and worked as a painter in Berlin and in the Harz. In 1893, Emperor Wilhelm II appointed him royal professor.
His works can now be found, among other places, in the municipal art collections of Chemnitz and in the Hunting Palace in Grunewald.
