Jorge Castillo, an artist of international renown, discovered his vocation at a very early age. At the age of ten he was already making copies of masterpieces, among them one by Rubens, whose painting later allowed him to understand the cubist language of Braque and Picasso. Born in Spain, he emigrated with his family to Buenos Aires shortly after his birth, although in 1955 he returned to Europe with the intention of settling in Paris. Economic limitations led him to finally settle in Madrid, after a brief stay in Vigo.
In the Spanish capital, his meeting with the art critic José María Moreno Galván was decisive: he recognized his talent and introduced him to the main artistic circles of the time. In the late 1950s he began to exhibit and sell his works, first at the Biosca gallery and then at Altamira. His initial production evolved towards engraving, a technique that would become his main expressive medium, without completely abandoning painting.
His international projection began with his participation in the São Paulo Biennial in 1960, followed by numerous exhibitions in prestigious institutions and cities such as New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Paris, Lisbon, Hanover and Geneva. He participated in two editions of the Venice Biennale (1964 and 1976) and in 1970 he had a solo exhibition at the National gallery in Berlin, dedicated entirely to a specific stage of his career, which consolidated his recognition in museums.
