This album, produced by the British artist George Romilly during the second half of the 19th century, is a unique exercise in the graphic interpretation of William Shakespeare's work. With a sensitive approach and polished line, Romilly reimagines iconic scenes from the Shakespearean canon, capturing both the theatricality of the moment and the psychology of the characters.
Academically, this album is in the nineteenth-century tradition of illustrating literary works, at a time when interest in Shakespeare was experiencing a renewed boom in England. The images act not only as visual accompaniment, but also as autonomous visual interpretations that dialogue with the original text.
