Paul Cadmus was an influential American painter, classified within the Magic Realism, famous for his figurative art that combined homoeroticism with an incisive social criticism. Trained at the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Drawing, he gained instant fame in 1934 with his work The Fleet's In! which caused a scandal and was withdrawn from an exhibition by the Secretary of the Navy due to its explicit depiction of sailors. This incident, however, boosted his career. Cadmus lived and worked within the queer art community, with Jared French being her artistic partner and Jon Anderson her romantic partner for 35 years and muse for many of her works, which are notable for their drawing technique and male nudes.
