The French Neoclassical School cultivated a refined taste for the mythological scene as a space of formal discipline and moral study. This drawing, of firm lines and balanced composition, reflects that spirit: the figures are arranged with almost architectural clarity.
The work is in direct dialogue with the legacy of Jacques-Louis David, whose ethical severity and compositional purity guided French neoclassicism, as well as with the lyrical delicacy of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, master of line and the idealized nude. In it, Davidian austerity and Ingres' restrained sensuality coexist: the scene remains narrative and sober, but allows the elegance of the bodies and the harmony of the whole to evoke the classical world as a territory of intellectualized beauty.
