Waves II represents one of the most refined and mature stages of Pablo Palazuelo, one of the great references of the Spanish abstract art of the 20th century. Created in 2001, this work reflects his continued interest in geometry, the perception of space and the dynamic rhythm of forms, elements that have defined his career since the 1950s.
Stylistically, Palazuelo combines formal rigor and visual sensibility, constructing an abstract language that moves between the mathematical and the organic. In Waves II, the undulating and repetitive forms suggest movement, flow and resonance, evoking waves or vibrations that converse with the viewer in an almost physical way. His restrained but carefully graduated use of color accentuates a sense of depth and rhythm, creating a visual experience that is both contemplative and kinetic.
This work is from his later years, when Palazuelo had reached full stylistic autonomy. After decades of exploration between geometric abstraction and research on visual perception, Waves II synthesizes his know-how: a balance between intellectual precision and poetic expressiveness. During this period, the artist worked in a serene and reflective manner, producing pieces that confirmed his status as a master of contemporary Spanish abstract art.
The importance of Waves II lies in its ability to represent, in a simple yet profound way, Palazuelo's essential themes: movement, harmony and the underlying structure of reality. For the collector, this work is a privileged example of his late language, where conceptual coherence and visual elegance converge in a solid testimony of his artistic legacy, consolidating his place in the history of modern and contemporary art.
Pablo Palazuelo was one of the great references of Spanish art in the second half of the 20th century. Initially trained in architecture in Madrid and Oxford, from 1939 he devoted himself entirely to painting, receiving important awards throughout his career, such as the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas and the Premio Velázquez, and was the subject of major retrospectives in institutions such as the Museo Reina Sofía, the MACBA and the Guggenheim Bilbao. His work is now part of major international modern and contemporary art collections.
