This delicate drawing is a representative sample of the refined graphic language of Ramon Casas, one of the key figures of Catalan modernism. The work presents an intimate and restrained female portrait, resolved with an economy of means that underlines the artist's sensitivity.

Casas constructs the face with a soft and enveloping stroke, combining precise lines with barely sketched areas, which gives the figure an ethereal and elegant presence. The lowered gaze and serene demeanor convey a sense of introspection and melancholy, frequent traits in his female portraits. The hat, treated with a dark, vibrant mass of charcoal, frames the face and balances the composition, while the light accents of color on the lips and clothing add warmth and refinement without breaking the tonal harmony.

Ramón Casas is one of the most internationally renowned Spanish artists of his time. His early participation in the Sala Parés and, especially, his success in the Salon des Champs Elysées, which earned him membership in the Société d'Artistes Françaises, consolidated his reputation. Since then, he developed an intense activity between Paris, Barcelona and Madrid.

Today, the work of Ramón Casas is part of the main Spanish public collections, among them the Museo del Prado, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, the Museo Reina Sofía and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, confirming his position as an essential artist for the collecting of modern Spanish art.
