This pair of works, one on oil and the other on paper, is a revealing example of the late landscape language of Eugenio Lucas Velázquez, a fundamental artist of Spanish Romanticism and a key figure in the expressive renewal of landscape and the popular scene in the mid-19th century.
The scene of "Landscape with fishermen" conveys a sense of precariousness and effort in the face of the immensity of nature, a recurring theme in the artist's work.
For its part, "Cliffs", with great gestural freedom, allows Lucas to explore effects of matter, glazes and tonal hallmarks, anticipating solutions that move away from the academic landscape to approach a more emotional and subjective vision of the territory.
In both works, the artist displays with greater freedom his romantic temperament and his Goyaesque heritage.
The work of Eugenio Lucas is kept in the Prado Museum, the Lázaro Galdiano Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao, the British Museum in London or the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among other international museums.
