DESCRIPTION

Italian School. XVII Century.
"St. Eladio".
Ink drawing on paper.
Signed: L. Cangiagio.
Measurements: 35 x 23 cm.

Interesting drawing realized in ink on paper that represents a scene of religious or allegorical character. In the composition appears a central figure with episcopal mitre and crosier, possibly a bishop or prelate, blessing or addressing two personages located to both sides: to the left a seated religious, and to the right a knight armed with armor, sword and shield. The scene is developed on a schematic background with clouds, a frequent resource in preparatory drawings or compositions of devotional character.

The line is loose and expressive, with fast and sure lines that suggest that it could be a study or preliminary sketch for a larger composition, possibly intended for painting, engraving or mural decoration. The technique used, based on line and light shading by scratching, is characteristic of the academic drawings used to fix the structure of the figures and the narrative disposition of the scene.

At the bottom of the paper appears an inscription that seems to read as "L. Cangiagio", which could correspond to the author or to a later attribution. Although there is no documentary confirmation available, the spelling and style of the drawing suggest a possible relationship with the Italian artistic tradition of the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries, where this type of figurative studies were common in workshops and academies.

The work shows signs of age typical of old paper, with stains and darkening that do not affect the legibility of the drawing. Piece of interest for collectors of antique drawing, preparatory studies and graphic work of European tradition, especially in the field of religious and academic drawing.
