DESCRIPTION
ULYSSE BUTIN (1838-Paris,1883).
"The farewell".
Mixed media on paper.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 46 x 35 cm; 63,5 x 51 cm (frame).
Like the rest of the scenes of farewells between peasant families, the one that now we bid is an emotional but contained work, loaded with humanity and narrative. It perfectly reflects the realistic and emotional style of Ulysse Buttin.
Ulysse Buttin's painting is associated with realism, although he is also close to the circle of impressionists. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of Alexandre Cabanel. Although he maintained an academic base, his work focused on scenes of everyday life, especially in maritime and coastal settings in Normandy, where he depicted fishermen, beaches and outdoor scenes with a direct observation of light and atmosphere. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and participated in the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, reflecting his link with this movement, although his style remained between traditional realism and the new trends.
