Scene of interior that captures with remarkable sensitivity a moment of daily life. The drawing places us in a modest and closed space, where a group of men gathers around a central interaction that seems to develop next to the counter. The arrangement of the figures generates a balanced but dynamic composition, in which each character brings a different nuance to the scene.
The artist resorts to a loose and expressive stroke, probably in pencil or charcoal, with which he builds both the volumes and the atmosphere. The use of chiaroscuro is particularly effective: the light, which descends from a lamp suspended from the ceiling, organizes the space and directs the gaze towards the core of the action, while the shadows envelop the characters and reinforce the sense of intimacy. The figures, dressed in long coats and hats, suggest an urban or semi-urban context typical of late 19th and early 20th century America.
