In this drawing, Oscar Niemeyer synthesizes the architecture by means of a fast, clean and essential stroke. The composition shows an elevated horizontal construction, of sober lines and light structure, where the building appears integrated in an open space, barely suggested by the horizon line and small scale elements.
The sketch reveals the importance of the curve and structural lightness in Niemeyer's language. The work functions as a condensed architectural idea: an image of balance between form, space and landscape, resolved with the graphic freedom typical of the Brazilian architect.
Oscar Niemeyer is considered an essential figure of modern Brazilian architecture and, together with Lúcio Costa, one of the creators of Brasilia. He participated in key projects such as the Ministry of Education and Health in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair and the UN headquarters. His work is characterized by the expressive use of reinforced concrete, the free curve and a monumental and poetic conception of space.
