DESCRIPTION
OSCAR NIEMEYER (Rio de Janeiro, 1907 - 2012).
"Sketches for buildings and columns in Brasilia".
Marker pen on paper.
Signed.
In this sketch, Oscar Niemeyer reduces architecture to its most essential expression: a continuous line, light and sure, capable of suggesting volume, rhythm and structure. The drawing seems to allude to the formal vocabulary of Brasilia, with a horizontal construction supported by curved columns, a characteristic element of his architectural language. The composition combines a general view of the building with small studies of detail. The architecture is conceived from the fluidity of the curve, the serene monumentality and the relationship between building and open space.
Oscar Niemeyer is considered an essential figure of modern Brazilian architecture and, together with Lúcio Costa, one of the creators of Brasilia. He participated in key projects such as the Ministry of Education and Health in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair and the UN headquarters. His work is characterized by the expressive use of reinforced concrete, the free curve and a monumental and poetic conception of space.
