Antonio Hernández Carpe developed a work marked by formal synthesis, linear language and a particular sensitivity towards the symbolic elements of nature. Among the recurring motifs of his production is the figure of the rooster, represented on numerous occasions. In fact, in the catalog of the foundation dedicated to the artist can be found several works featuring this theme, such as Gallo Ha (1955), done in watercolor, or Gallo en el jardín (1972), executed in felt-tip pen. These compositions are evidence of Hernández Carpe's interest in organic forms, visual rhythm and the construction of surfaces from geometric patterns and meticulous strokes, elements that make the rooster an expressive and deeply characteristic motif within his artistic universe.
Antonio Hernández Carpe (Espinardo, Murcia, 1923 - Madrid, 1977) was an outstanding Spanish painter and muralist recognized for his contribution to contemporary art in the Region of Murcia. From a very young age he showed interest in painting, training at the School of Arts and Crafts of Murcia and later at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, where he came into contact with important artistic figures of his time. His work is characterized by the incorporation of geometric elements, the cubist influence and the use of intense and expressive colors. After a stay in Rome in the 1950s, he developed an important mural production present in public buildings, universities and cultural spaces in different Spanish cities, especially in Murcia. He also made outstanding religious stained glass windows and cultivated easel painting, with his landscapes of the Mar Menor standing out.
Throughout his career he participated in national and international exhibitions and received several awards. His works are part of museum collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia, the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art and other European institutions.
