DESCRIPTION

ZILIA SÁNCHEZ (Havana, 1926-San Juan de Puerto Rico, 2024).
Untitled, 1950.
Ink on paper.
Slight stains on the edges.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 22 x 30 cm; 41.5 x 51.5 cm (frame).
The work of Zilia Sanchez is distinguished by her so-called "structures": compositions of minimalist appearance built by means of curves, tensions and reliefs that seem to emerge from the interior of the support. She mainly uses white, black and gray tones.
Throughout his career he had important solo and group exhibitions in America and Europe. Among them are his exhibitions at the Lyceum in Havana (1953), the El Bosco Gallery in Madrid (1967) and the Erotica exhibition in New York (1984). His work was also included in international events such as the V Biennial of São Paulo in 1959 and various exhibitions dedicated to contemporary Cuban art. His works are part of important international collections, among them the Medellin Biennial Corporation, the Instituto de Cooperación Hispánica in Madrid and the Miami Metropolitan Museum and Art Center. She also received numerous awards, such as the Second Leopoldo Romañach Salon Prize in 1951 and the Prize for Excellency from the Metro Art Gallery of New York in 1986.
Recognized today as a fundamental figure of Latin American abstraction and contemporary feminist art, Zilia Sanchez developed a unique visual language where geometry, sensuality and body converge in forms of extraordinary subtlety and poetic force.
