Amparo Cores Uría was a Spanish painter whose work is inscribed within the lyrical abstraction, developing a very personal plastic language based on the chromatic sensibility and the atmospheric construction of the image.
She began her artistic training in Asturias, influenced by her grandfather, the painter José Uría, and by local artists such as Antonio Luis. In his early years he also collaborated in restoration work in the Cathedral of Oviedo with Víctor Hevia. Later he furthered his training with Eugenio Tamayo and, in the 1950s, he moved to Madrid to study at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and the Academia de San Jorge, where he completed his training in Paris, where he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Julian, as well as working with André Lhote. In this international context she came into contact with the European avant-garde and met her husband, the artist Jesús de la Sota, with whom she settled permanently in Madrid in 1961.
Amparo Cores Uría's work is characterized by abstract landscapes with a strong atmospheric charge, still lifes close to post-cubism and abstraction, and portraits of an intimate and psychological nature. She also explored collage and assemblage, with influences of Dadaism and surrealism, consolidating a diverse production but unified by the search for chromatic balance and contained expressiveness.
In 2004 she was awarded the Silver Medal of Asturias for her contribution to Asturian contemporary art. Her work is represented in important collections, especially the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, which preserves pieces such as Nº 28 (1999) and incorporated more than 700 works donated by her family, consolidating her legacy within the contemporary Spanish art scene.
