JUAN REUS PARRA (Valencia, 1912–2003)
“Bullfighting Scene”
Charcoal and watercolor on paper
Signed.
Measurements: 26 x 33 cm; 41 x 48 cm (frame)
Specializing in bullfighting themes and portraits of bullfighters, Juan Reus began his artistic training under the painter Ruano Llopis. He later worked in Balbino Giner’s fan workshop. He exhibited his paintings for the first time at the Prats and Collado bazaars in Valencia. In the 1940s, he was hired as a designer of bullfighting posters—a genre for which he was particularly well known—at Litografía Ortega, where he replaced Ruano Llopis and met the man who would become his principal mentor, Roberto Domingo. Juan Reus’s work is currently on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia, as well as at the Bullfighting Museums in Valencia and the Manolete Museum in Villa del Río.
