DESCRIPTION
Spanish Monarchy, 16th–17th centuries.
“Military privilege with coat of arms.”
Manuscript in Latin on parchment, with polychrome and gold illumination.
Headed by the formula “Nos Philippus” and illustrated with a central heraldic coat of arms, emblems, and marginal decoration. It includes later signatures and annotations, among them an inscription in Spanish identifying it as a “military privilege in due form.”
It shows creases, stains, discoloration, and losses of the support, especially on the right side, which partially affect the text and ornamentation.
Measurements: 49.5 × 76 cm; 58 × 84 cm (frame).
The document formalizes a military and chivalric grant issued under the authority of a monarch named Felipe. The extensive legal text occupies the upper margin, while the central area is reserved for the beneficiary’s coat of arms, quartered with a tree and a towered structure and surmounted by a helmet. The presence of signatures, validation notes, and subsequent archival annotations reinforces its significance as a historical and genealogical record.
The meticulous illumination transforms the charter into a work of art. The margins feature allegorical figures, grotesques, instruments, plant motifs, and small heraldic emblems, rendered in a vivid palette of blues, reds, greens, and gold. This combination of solemn script, ornate decoration, and heraldry reflects the function of these documents, which were intended both to certify a grant and to publicly affirm the rank attained by its holder.
