Portraits constitute a fundamental genre in Zuloaga’s work; for him, capturing the subject’s character was paramount, even at the expense of details and subtleties in their expression.
Ignacio Zuloaga was one of the leading Spanish painters of the early 20th century. The nephew of the ceramist Daniel Zuloaga, he began drawing and engraving as a child in the family workshop. He abandoned his engineering studies to devote himself to painting and completed his training by copying the great masters at the Prado Museum. After traveling to Rome and subsequently settling in Paris, he came into contact with prominent artists and movements of the French avant-garde, even experimenting with Impressionism and Pointillism. However, his interest in the roots of Spanish tradition led him to gradually develop his own artistic language, centered on the depiction of landscapes, local figures, and customs.
Beginning in the late 19th century, he achieved international recognition, especially after the French government acquired several of his works. From 1903 onward, he regularly participated in international exhibitions, and his prestige continued to grow. Between 1906 and 1913, he worked primarily in Segovia, where he found inspiration in the austerity of the Castilian landscape and its inhabitants, in keeping with the sensibilities of the Generation of ’98. A great admirer of El Greco and Goya, Zuloaga amassed a significant art collection and even purchased Goya’s birthplace in Fuendetodos. Considered, along with José Gutiérrez Solana, one of the great continuators of the 20th-century Spanish painting tradition, his work is currently housed in major national and international museums, including the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía National Art Center, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée Rodin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
