Leslie Grimes was a painter, illustrator, and caricaturist whose career evolved from the world of illustration and journalism toward a style of painting closely linked to the Mediterranean landscape. Trained at the Kingston School of Art and later in Paris, he was highly active as an illustrator and graphic artist during the early decades of his career. In 1927, he succeeded David Low as the political cartoonist for the newspaper *The Star* and also created posters and advertising work, in addition to serving as a war artist during World War II. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, and pieces by him are currently housed at the Imperial War Museum. A pivotal moment in his career came in 1952, when he settled in Ibiza and left journalism to devote himself fully to painting. Mediterranean light, the coastlines, traditional architecture, and daily life in the Balearic Islands then became the focal point of his work, evolving into the most characteristic motifs of his pictorial language. As an active member of the vibrant artistic scene in Ibiza and Mallorca, he exhibited at venues such as Galerías Costa, Ebusus, El Corsari, and Galería Danús, and received significant recognition, including the Gold Medal at the Second Balearic Islands Landscape and Costume Painting Competition (1965) and First Prize at the Fifth Pollença Summer Painting Exhibition (1966). His body of work thus serves as a fascinating testament to the perspective of foreign artists who, drawn by the uniqueness and luminosity of the Balearic Islands, helped enrich the region’s artistic landscape during the second half of the 20th century.
