A painter and sculptor, Cristino Mallo pursued his artistic career in Madrid. He began his training at the School of Arts and Crafts in Avilés, and in 1923 he enrolled at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where his teachers included Capuz and Mateo Inurria. In 1931, he signed the manifesto of the Agrupación Gremial de Artistas Plásticos, and two years later he won the National Sculpture Prize. In 1935, he began teaching at the School of Arts and Crafts in Salamanca. After the Civil War ended, he settled permanently in Madrid, where he continued his teaching career as a professor at the School of Arts and Crafts from 1966 to 1972. He participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions, winning third prize in 1952 and first prize in 1954. During these years, his recognition grew, and he achieved international prestige by exhibiting his work in Italy. In 1973, he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and in 1983, he received the Gold Medal for Fine Arts. His work is currently represented in the Eduardo Capa Foundation, Caixa Galicia, the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, and other public and private collections; he also has significant public monuments in Madrid.
