A key figure in the Spanish-American avant-garde, Rafael Barradas was largely self-taught. In 1913 he traveled to Europe, where he came into contact with Italian Futurism and later with the avant-garde movements in Barcelona and Madrid—experiences that would give rise to Vibrationism, his principal contribution to modern art.During his stay in Spain, he associated with artists and writers such as Joaquín Torres García and participated in major avant-garde exhibitions, including those at the Dalmau Gallery and the Society of Iberian Artists.His work is represented in major institutional collections, particularly at the National Museum of Visual Arts in Montevideo and the Reina Sofía National Art Center in Madrid, as well as in other Spanish and international collections.
