EUGENIO LUCAS VELÁZQUEZ (Madrid, 1817–1870).
“Bullfighting Scene,” 1862.

The world of bullfighting offered the artist a particularly suitable setting for developing a style based on spontaneous brushwork, movement, and the depiction of scenes from everyday life. This theme appears in works such as *La suerte de varas* and *Capea de pueblo*, held by the Museo Nacional del Prado, or *Apartado de toros en la Muñoza* and *Corrida de toros en un pueblo*, which belong to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
It is within this context that *Bullfighting Scene*, dated 1862, is situated, at a time of artistic maturity in the artist’s career. The composition depicts a bullfight from a particularly dynamic perspective: in the foreground, the bull and the horses are the focal point of the action, while several figures attempt to step aside or intervene in the fight. In the background, a crowd of spectators is scattered around the bullring, rendered with quick brushstrokes and patches of color. Lucas does not aim to depict each character with precision, but rather to convey the sense of movement, tension, and chaos characteristic of a bullfight.
The use of gouache on paper is particularly well-suited to this purpose. The technique allows for rapid and spontaneous execution, evident in the loose brushstrokes, the slightly undefined contours, and the free application of color. Ochre and earthy tones dominate the scene, while reds, blues, and greens stand out in the costumes and help direct the viewer’s gaze toward the various focal points of action. In this way, the washes and brushstrokes take on as much importance as the subject matter itself.
This technical and compositional freedom reflects the profound influence of Francisco de Goya on Lucas Velázquez. The artist drew from Goya both the bullfighting themes and the scenes of everyday life, as well as a style of painting based on the expressiveness of the brushstroke and the ability to suggest figures and settings with just a few strokes. However, Lucas develops these techniques through his own sensibility—one that is more spontaneous and sketch-like—transforming the scene into a fleeting impression of the spectacle.
Eugenio Lucas Velázquez (Madrid, 1817–1870) was trained in Madrid’s artistic circles and drew primarily on the great masters of the Prado Museum, especially Velázquez and Goya. Eugenio Lucas Velázquez’s work is held in major Spanish collections, particularly the Museo Nacional del Prado, the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, the Banco de España Collection, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. These institutions house a significant portion of his body of work, with a particular emphasis on his bullfighting scenes, scenes of everyday life, and works inspired by Goya.
