Verdugo Landi’s undisputed mentor was Emilio Ocón, a prominent 19th-century marine painter of whom he was the favorite disciple. He eventually settled in Madrid, where he worked as an illustrator for *La Esfera*, a publication edited by his brother Francisco. In 1894, he returned to Málaga, where he was appointed curator of the city’s museum. He regularly participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions, winning third prize in 1899 and 1906 and second prize in 1910 and 1929. He was also awarded an honorable mention at the 1892 International Exhibition in Madrid. He also distinguished himself at international exhibitions, winning a second medal at the Panama International Exhibition (1916), the Grand Diploma of Honor at the Hispano-French Exhibition in Zaragoza (1919), and a second medal at the Barcelona International Exhibition (1929). His works are represented in the Prado Museum, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Museum of Fine Arts and Municipal Heritage in Málaga, and the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, among other public and private collections.
