DESCRIPTION
PEILL & PUTZLER lamp. Germany, 1970s.
Folded vitreous paste with millefiori decoration.
Measurements: 106 x 30 cm.
In this lamp Peill & Putzler revitalises and modernises the millenary technique of millefiori ("mille" (thousand) and "fiori" (flowers), traditionally associated with Venetian glassware, from Murano) to achieve an absolutely modern result, tending towards the abstraction of the floral forms. This is entirely in keeping with the brand, which, during the 1970s, expressed the fascination of the time with futuristic, sculptural globular forms using materials such as highly polished metals and glass.
Peill & Sohn was born as an industrial design firm in 1903, merging with Gebruder Putzler (Silesia) after the Second World War. It was then, in the 1950s, that it specialised in lamp design. From 1952, the emphasis on innovative design and intricate work meant that Peill & Putzler became one of the founding members of the German Design Council. It was quickly admired in architectural circles, due above all to the high standard of production as well as its attention to detail. In 1994, he moved his glass factories to Slovenia, Poland and Chechnya.
