BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

MART STAM (Purmerend, Netherlands, 1899 - Zurich, 1986) and MARCEL BREUER (Hungary, 1902-USA, 1981) for Thonet.
Set of three Cantilever armchairs model S34 designed in 1926.
Black leather and tubular steel. Handmade black leather seat and open back and tubular armrests with black wood.
Signs of use and patina.
Made by Thonet, leather inscription.
Measurements: 83 x 59 x 63 cm, seat height 45 cm.

Marcel Breuer and Mart Stam were, along with Mies van der Rohe, key figures in the development and popularization of the cantilever chair in the 1920s. These chairs are the first cantilever chairs in the history of furniture and were first used in 1927 at the Weißenhof in Stuttgart. They feature chrome-plated tubular metal frames and air leather upholstery on the seat, backrest and armrests. They are characterized by the cantilever support, which leaves behind the concept of four legs as a means of support. It is, therefore, a more comfortable seat adapted to the shape of the body, as well as to the modern buildings of the time.
