Pair of SET chairs, designed by Marcello Siard for the Italian firm Longato and produced in Spain by Uldesa during the 1970's. These pieces are a representative example of the Spanish style. These pieces are a representative example of mid-20th century industrial design, which explores the use of new materials and technologies in the production of modern furniture.
The set is entirely made of molded plastic, which allows for a continuous, homogeneous form with no visible joints, underlining its functional and modern character. Its glossy finish and vibrant red color reinforce the aesthetic and visual dimension of the design, while alluding to a clear pop and playful vocation, characteristic of the visual language of the 1970s.
The design is organized around curved volumes, soft lines and an enveloping backrest that suggests comfort without sacrificing formal simplicity. The cylindrical legs, also in plastic, are structurally integrated into the body of the seat, contributing to its stability and the perception of formal unity.
These SET chairs represent a milestone in the evolution of contemporary furniture by incorporating plastic as a main material not only for its aesthetic and structural qualities, but also for its potential for mass production, which democratized access to modern design.
