Exceptional piece of furniture, whose design is in line with the "Streamline Moderne" style of the 1930s and 1940s. This desk is an ode to elegance and sumptuous materials. Its design is defined by streamlined curves. The silhouette is fluid, elegant and meant to be admired from all angles. The most distinctive element is the dome or semi-cylinder that sits atop the root wood (probably walnut root) tabletop, a material with an organic and sumptuous grain. This dome houses small drawers and compartments for correspondence.
The work surface is wide and its rounded edges follow the flowing line of the cabinet. It is upholstered in cognac-colored leather, which adds warmth and a noble feel, as well as being a sign of luxury. Under the top, a wooden skirt houses two additional drawers with discreet handles.
The four polished aluminum legs are slender and tapered. They are joined by curved metal crosspieces that cross under the desk, giving a sense of lightness and dynamism.
As was characteristic of the best Art Deco, the furniture explores the combination of warm and cool materials. Here we see the opulence of root wood and leather in direct contrast to the industrial coldness and sheen of polished aluminum. In short, this desk is the epitome of modernity and luxury of its time.
The ensemble conveys the fascination for speed and the beauty of streamlined lines that germinated in Art Deco furniture and would be developed in Space Age furniture.
