The "Safari Chair" was a design reinterpreted by many designers during the 20th century. The 1960s version, like this one, is particularly interesting for its mix of industrial and organic materials.
The concept of the "Safari Chair" originates from 19th century campaign furniture. It was furniture designed for British army officers and explorers in the colonies (especially in Africa and India), who needed to be light, portable and sturdy.
Danish designer Kaare Klint is considered the father of the modern Safari Chair. In 1933, he designed his "Safari Chair" model, based on an Indian model. Klint's was made of wood, canvas and leather straps.
This style made a strong comeback in the post-war period. It fit perfectly with the desire for more casual living and an aesthetic that valued structural honesty.
While Scandinavian models tended to use wood (ash, beech) and canvas, this pair features a bolder combination of materials with an industrial touch.
