BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

EJNER LARSEN (Denmark, 1917-1987) & AKSEL BENDER MADSEN (Denmark,1916-2000).
Exceptional armchair, 1953.
Teak wood and "Hallingdal" fabric upholstery in brown (color 227) and leather.
Measurements: 93 x 78 cm; 84 x 41 cm (seat height and depth).
This armchair designed in 1953 by Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen is an outstanding example of the formal and conceptual mastery that characterizes the collaboration between the two Danish designers. Crafted with teak legs and upholstered in the iconic "Hallingdal" fabric in brown (color 227), the piece incorporates a black leather collar that accentuates its understated elegance and careful attention to detail. It was produced by renowned cabinetmaker Ludvig Pontoppidan and presented at the 1953 Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition, one of the most prestigious venues for postwar Scandinavian design.
Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen worked together for more than three decades, developing an aesthetic language that married precision craftsmanship with a deep understanding of ergonomics and modern functionality. Their work reflects the principles of Danish modernism, where structural simplicity, respect for natural materials and harmony between form and function are integrated into a timeless design discourse.
This armchair, with its generous proportions and organic lines, sums up the spirit of the Danish school of the mid-20th century: a synthesis of traditional craftsmanship and modernity, where every element, from the warmth of the wood to the texture of the fabric.
