BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Modeled after PEDER MOOS (Denmark, 1906- 1991).
Chaise longue, ca. 1950.
Beech wood and wool upholstery.
Measurements: 83 x 127 x 58 cm; 25 cm (seat height).
Unique example of a chaise longue made of beech wood, with original woven wool upholstery. The fabric was designed by Sigvard Bernadotte in the 1940s. Executed in a modest but noble beech wood, this chaise longue demonstrates how much care and devotion to craftsmanship can add to the final result of a work. Its softly carved angles and finely polished surfaces invite touch and reveal the sensitivity of handwork. It is not the ostentation of precious materials that gives vitality to the piece, but the precision and "feel" of the hand that executed it. The fabric, with its strong graphic composition, has been carefully cleaned and preserved, and constitutes an essential element in the aesthetic and material integrity of the work.
The design of this exceptional piece indicates that it was made by a disciple or follower of Peder Moos. It is an eloquent manifestation of the deep appreciation for wood that Moos sought to convey to his students. It probably belongs to his teaching period in Copenhagen, between 1950 and 1953, a period in which the craftsman combined his pedagogical work with his independent practice as a cabinetmaker.
Peder Moos was a Danish designer and cabinetmaker known for personally crafting almost all of his pieces. The son of a farmer, he trained as a carpenter in Jutland and Copenhagen, and worked in Paris, Geneva and Lausanne before opening his own workshop in Bredgade, Copenhagen, in 1935.
His working method was profoundly artisanal: he personally chose the wood, made the pieces before drawing the plans and never used nails or screws, but dowels and wedges of different woods. Throughout his career he made between 30 and 40 pieces, all exclusive and made to order. He maintained a special relationship with his clients, refusing to fix prices before completing a work, as he considered that this would affect its quality.
In addition to his independent production, Moos taught at the Kerteminde School of Crafts and maintained a workshop in Bredebro. His furniture, exhibited in cities such as Stockholm, The Hague and New York (MoMA), is today highly valued in the design market, reaching record prices at international auctions.
