The cantilever chair, also known as cantilever, is one of the examples of design and ingenuity that marked a before and after in the manufacture of the traditional chair with four suspension points. Its originality lies in the structural balance with the two front legs as the main point of support. The cantilever chair is a type of seat that does not have traditional legs, but two tubular uprights folded at floor and seat level. The first design of this type is officially attributed to Mart Stam, a Dutch urban architect and furniture designer associated with the Bauhaus school, in 1926. The following year, it would be produced by the Thonet company for presentation at the exhibition Die Wohnung (The House) held in the Weissenholf district of Stuttgart. In 1927, Mies van der Rohe also patented a model of this chair. Another designer of this chair model was the Hungarian Marcel Breuer, who experimented with new designs using steel tubes. The chair soon became one of the most famous design creations of the 20th century.
