BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

KLAUS UREDAT (Germany, 1932) for COR.
Modular sofa "Corbi". Original design from 1969.
Recently reupholstered with luxurious velvet by Pierre Frey.
Three modules.
In perfect condition.
Measurements: 60 x 108 x 70 cm; 39 cm (seat height).

This spectacular set of three modules model "Corbi" represents the pinnacle of German experimental design of the late 1960s. Klaus Uredat broke with the rigidity of traditional mid-century furniture to embrace the "Space Age" aesthetic and organic design, where form follows relaxation and not just function.

Sculptural in morphology, each module features a concave curvature at the front and convex at the back, creating a sense of fluid movement. When joined together, the pieces form a continuous, sinuous wave that softens the architecture of any room.

The backrest is resolved by an independent cylindrical volume. This oversized roller provides ergonomic support while acting as a geometric counterpoint to the fluid base.

The genius of Uredat's design for COR lies in its compositional freedom. Lacking visible rigid fixed anchors, the three elements function as independent entities. They can be aligned to form a continuous sofa of great visual impact, curved to create an intimate conversation area ("tête-à-tête"), or separated to function as individual armchairs and daybeds (when the backrest is removed).

Pierre Frey's luxurious velvet finish accentuates the tactile and sumptuous effects of all the features just mentioned.

The chosen color interacts with the light thanks to the texture of the velvet, creating tonal nuances ranging from dark blue almost black in the shadows of the cylinders to a vibrant turquoise in the illuminated areas of the seat. This accentuates the three-dimensionality of the design's curves.

Created in 1969, the sofa embodies the spirit of an era that sought softer, lower (directly, above the floor) and cozier forms, rejecting sharp corners in favor of visual and tactile "safety."

Born in Germany in 1932, Klaus Uredat is a visionary German designer and architect whose work reached its zenith in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Although his name is less well-known to the general public compared to contemporaries such as Verner Panton or Joe Colombo, he is revered by collectors and design experts for creating some of the most radical, sculptural and futuristic pieces of his time. His design philosophy lies at the intersection of functional sculpture and comfort, characterized by the use of plastic materials and organic forms that challenged the conventions of traditional furniture.

Uredat developed his career during a period of reconstruction and subsequent economic optimism in Europe. His work matured during the Space Age, a time when industrial design became obsessed with the future, modularity and new synthetic materials such as polyurethane and fiberglass.

His legacy rests mainly on two legendary designs that today are museum pieces and highly collectible objects: the "Corbi" Modular system (1969), officially presented at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne in 1972, and the "Targa" chair (1971), manufactured by the Horn Collection.
