DESCRIPTION
Large applique, ca. 1950. PAAVO TYNELL style (Finland, 1890-1973).
Brass body and perforated cone, stained beech wood handle.
Measurements: 35x28x20 cm.
This piece is a sophisticated example of mid-century Scandinavian design. Its aesthetic clearly evokes the works of Finnish master Paavo Tynell, known for his ability to soften the coldness of metal through organic forms and the use of filtered light.
The protagonist is a large polished brass cone. Its wide opening ensures excellent downward light diffusion, ideal for accent or reading lighting.
In keeping with Tynell's distinctive style, the lower edge of the shade features a pattern of small punctures. This detail is not just decorative; when turned on, light filters through the holes creating a "starry sky" effect or subtle sparkles that add magic and texture to the lighting.
The connection between the base and the shade is made by means of a stained beech wood stem. This tapered component provides warmth and a tactile contrast to the metallic sheen of the brass, a defining characteristic of Nordic design that seeks to integrate natural materials.
This wall lamp stands out for its sculptural quality. Unlike the more rigid industrial designs, the inclusion of wood and perforated brass gives it a "domestic" and luxurious feel. It is a piece with enough presence to stand alone in a foyer, or to add character to a desk or reading nook.
