In addition to being one of Johannes Andersen's most distinguished examples, the Capri swivel armchairs are an excellent example of mid-Mid-Century Danish furniture design, famous for combining elegance, comfort and functionality.
Johannes Andersen trained as a cabinetmaker, completing his studies in 1922. He then began his career working in various workshops, and during these years he began to design his own furniture. Thus, in the mid-1930s he set up his own workshop, at a time when Danish design was beginning to be recognized internationally. Andersen would also receive commissions from furniture firms in Norway and Sweden, and for the Swedish Trensum he would design a series of coffee tables with organic lines in rosewood and teak that would attract the public's attention for their unique character and modernity. Also particularly famous was his "Capri" series of side tables, today highly sought after. His ultimate success came with the rise of Denmark's working class; between the late 1950s and during the 1960s the middle class began buying new homes, which they furnished with new, modern pieces. By the time, at the age of eighty, Andersen closed his studio, he had become an internationally known and appreciated designer.
