ÓSCAR TUSQUETS I BLANCA (Barcelona, 1941).
Center candle holder or candelabra, 2011
Azo and colorless blown glass.
Designed and produced by Borek Sipek.
Measurements: 13 x 37 x 37 cm.
This blown glass candelabra condenses several of the features that define the collaboration between Oscar Tusquets and designer and master glassmaker Bo?ek Šípek, as well as the hybrid sensibility that characterizes Tusquets' work as an architect, designer and artist.
Far from conceiving the object solely from its functionality, Tusquets introduces a sculptural and ceremonial component: the piece is articulated as an elevated bowl that houses five glass spheres, conceived as small luminous reliquaries. The combination of soft geometries, the sensuality of blown glass and the subtle contrast between transparency and color reveal Tusquets' affinity for an expressive, almost narrative design, which always seeks to escape from industrial coldness to recover the artisanal and symbolic value of the domestic object.
Óscar Tusquets is an architect, painter and designer, trained at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona and the ETSAB. In 1964 he founded Studio PER with Lluís Clotet, with whom he collaborated regularly until 1984. During this period he participated in the enlargement of the Faculty of Medicine in Barcelona (1980) and in the remodeling of the Palau de la Música Catalana (1982). In 1987 he teamed up with the architect Carlos Díaz, with whom he carried out projects in various countries, including Japan and Germany. He has been awarded the Delta de Oro del FAD prize on several occasions, and in 1987 he received the Sant Jordi Cross.
