BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

MATHIEU MATÉGOT (Hungary, 1910-2001)
Spider. France, 1950.
Brass and metal.
Measurements: 20 x 30 x 30 cm.

Chandelier designed by Mathieu Matégot in France around 1950, an emblematic piece of postwar modern design that perfectly summarizes the innovative and poetic language of the author. This chandelier combines a central structure and arms in gilded brass with shades in white lacquered perforated metal, creating a delicate balance between visual lightness and sculptural presence.

The composition is articulated around four curved and adjustable arms, which unfold elegantly from the central axis. This arrangement generates a rhythmic and dynamic interplay in the space, while also allowing the light to be directed in a functional way. The conical perforated metal shades, Matégot's unmistakable hallmark, filter the lighting in a soft and enveloping manner, producing a warm and sophisticated ambiance without glare.

Mathieu Matégot was one of the great renovators of 20th century French design. Of Hungarian origin and based in France, he was noted for his pioneering use of perforated metal - the famous Rigitulle technique - and for his ability to unite industrial processes with an almost sculptural sensibility. His work encompasses furniture, lighting and decorative objects, and today is represented in museums and international collections.

This chandelier represents the optimism and modernity of the 1950s, when design sought new forms, materials and technical solutions. Its authorship, the quality of execution and the aesthetic strength of the piece make it a highly desirable object for collectors and lovers of historical design. Ideal for modern, mid-century or contemporary interiors, it brings character, elegance and a clear heritage value.

Matégot was a French-Hungarian designer, one of the most prominent French designers of the 1950s. He is currently represented in important collections such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Centre Georges Pompidou in the same city, etc.
