This magnificent "Tulip" side table, designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll, is an absolute classic of international design. Conceived as part of his famous "Pedestal Collection" in the mid-1950s, Saarinen sought to eliminate the "chaos of legs" under traditional tables, creating a pure, sculptural form supported by a single central support.
This example, produced in the 1970s, is particularly notable for its extraordinary Verde Alpi green marble top, with its fine veins and exceptionally elegant texture. The chromatic richness of the stone brings a sophistication that is uncommon among Tulip versions, making it a piece of strong decorative presence and great appeal to collectors.
The marble is spectacularly preserved, with no flaws or scratches, while the base exhibits only sligthly wear consistent with age and use.
Saarinen began designing furniture in the 1930s, in collaboration with Charles Eames, winning the 1940 prize in the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Later, as an independent designer, Saarinen created furniture designs for the Knoll firm. Today his creations are present in the most important collections around the world, including the MoMA in New York.
