The One Point chair (technically known as model 6-441) is one of the most refined and brilliant pieces of post-war Swiss design. Its genius lies in Bellmann's experimentation with molded plywood, creating a chair characterized by a backrest joined at a single point. The central opening provides a pleasing flexibility in the backrest while functioning as a handle, which is particularly practical.
Hans Bellmann was a seminal Swiss architect and designer who acted as a bridge between the radical rationalism of the Bauhaus, where he was a direct student of Mies van der Rohe, and the functional refinement of postwar Swiss design. Trained in Dessau and Berlin before the school's closure in 1933, Bellmann returned to Switzerland to develop a philosophy based on "good form" (Die Gute Form), characterized by extreme minimalism, honesty of materials and precision engineering that sought maximum visual lightness. His genius lay in experimenting with molded plywood, creating icons such as the One Point chair for Horgen-Glarus - famous for its backrest joined at a single point - and the GA table for Knoll, pieces that demonstrate his mastery in giving flexibility and dynamism to apparently rigid structures. In addition to his prolific work as a designer and architect, his influence extended through teaching at the Zurich School of Design, consolidating a legacy of elegant austerity that today is preserved in institutions such as the MoMA in New York.
