The "Buck" JH-517 chairs, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1951, are one of the finest expressions of Danish design in the mid-20th century. Conceived at the height of the golden age of Scandinavian modernism, these pieces combine a solid, sculptural structure with exceptional ergonomics, reflecting Wegner's mastery of woodworking and his deep understanding of the human body.
Originally made by Johannes Hansen, one of Denmark's most prestigious cabinetmakers, the JH-517s feature a carefully assembled solid teak frame and a distinctive sloping backrest that envelops the body and provides a relaxed posture. The seemingly simple design reveals a complex interplay of curved lines and structural tensions that give the chair its unmistakable identity.
The name "Buck" refers to the robustness and stability of the piece, qualities that are balanced with restrained elegance and visual lightness. The leather upholstery, later incorporated into many examples, enhances comfort and adds a patina that dialogues with the natural warmth of teak.
Hans J. Wegner was a key figure in 20th century Danish design. Trained as a cabinetmaker and designer in Copenhagen, he combined craftsmanship and design to create furniture of great ergonomics and timelessness. His pieces, now considered icons, are part of important international museum collections such as the MoMA in New York or Die Neue Samlung in Munich.
