Danish industrial designer Kurt Østervig trained as a naval engineer at the Odense shipyard, and was soon hired as a furniture designer by one of the most prominent Danish firms of the 1930s and 1940s, the E. Knudsen studio. In 1947 he became independent, establishing his own studio. Throughout his career, Østervig created all kinds of modern-style furniture, working for leading Scandinavian furniture firms. His constant search for new challenges resulted in many original design solutions for specialized furniture for nursing homes, ships, hotels and cinemas. His favorite material was always oak, especially in combination with leather. He was especially known for his drawings, of unusual perfection and detail, more like works of art or colored photographs than working drawings. His designs are today in prominent collections, such as that of MoMA in New York.
Nanna Ditzel designed for Kvadrat the world's most famous furniture textile, "Hallingdal", which has remained in constant production and widespread use since its launch in 1965.
