Mogens Koch drew the first lines of his bookcase system for his own home in 1928 and completed the final result in 1932. His design is particularly flexible, space-saving and adaptable to book formats.
Before teaching at the Royal Academy, Mogens Koch had the good fortune to be a student of the celebrated architect and professor Kaare Klint. Klint challenged Koch to draw timeless designs; not only furniture architect, but also in the design of monuments, buildings, textiles and silverware. Klint was obviously impressed with Mogens Koch's talent as a student, and after graduating he went on to work in the architectural firm of Carl Petersen, Ivar Bentsen and Kaare Klint. Koch worked in this studio from 1925 to 1932 and it was here that he learned to work with the principles of the Danish functionalist tradition: respect for the functional requirements of the task, simplicity in design, use of the experience of previous generations and the use of modular units often of specific materials.
Furniture designed by Mogens Koch is some of the most elegant and practical solutions to the demands of comfort, functionality and aesthetics. Koch's designs have been the centerpiece of the Rud Rasmussen company since 1932, and many of his furniture designs are still in production today.
Rud Rasmussen, also known as Rud. Rasmussens Snedkerier, was a wood furniture manufacturer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The joinery was founded by Rudolph Rasmussen in 1869 and collaborated with some of the leading Danish furniture designers of the 20th century.
