This piece, one of the first creations of the brothers Fernando Campana and Humberto Campana, is part of the MoMA collection, and has become an icon of contemporary Brazilian design. The origin of the Vermelha is as simple as it is poetic: the Campanas bought a large bundle of rope from a street stall and brought it to their studio. As they stacked the strings on a table, the chaotic shape they took sparked their imagination. "At that moment we looked at each other and almost simultaneously said: this is the chair we want to build. It is a representation of Brazil in its beautiful chaos and deconstruction," they recall.
Fernando and Humberto, born in 1961 and 1953 respectively, founded Estudio Campana in 1983, marking a before and after in contemporary design. Their work is characterized by experimentation with unconventional materials: recycled wood, leftover fabrics, plastic tubes, cables and even stuffed toys, transformed into pieces that combine art and functionality. Each object reflects his ability to reinvent the everyday, endowing it with character, humor and visual poetry.
