CLAUS BONDERUP (Denmark, 1944) & TORSTEN THORUP (Denmark, 1943) for Fog & Morug.
Suspension lamp "Semi", 1968.
Chromed metal.
Measurements: 40 x 70 cm (diameter).
The Semi suspension lamp is one of the undisputed landmarks of Danish design in the second half of the 20th century. Conceived in 1968 by the then architecture students Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup, the piece was born with the explicit ambition of exploring a refined geometry, with defined vertices and clean lines, in tune with the formal rigor that characterized the Scandinavian tradition of the time. The project was submitted to a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where it won first prize, thus anticipating its subsequent international projection.
Formally, Semi is distinguished by its inverted semicircular silhouette, with a taut profile, which combines visual lightness and graphic forcefulness. In contrast to the soft organicism dominant in certain sectors of 1960s design, Bonderup and Thorup proposed a piece with a marked geometric identity, capable of generating direct and controlled lighting without renouncing a timeless aesthetic. The structural clarity and the absence of ornamentation respond to a rational conception of the object, where form and function are integrated in a balanced synthesis.
After graduating in 1969 from the School of Architecture of the Royal Academy, both architects began their professional careers in the studio of Henning Larsen, a key figure in contemporary Danish architecture. Shortly thereafter they consolidated a collaboration that would extend throughout most of their careers, developing projects ranging from the design of clocks to museum and urban planning interventions, such as the Arktikum museum in Finland, the Elsinore harbor area or collaborations with Georg Jensen. This disciplinary breadth reveals an integral conception of design, in which architecture, object and infrastructure dialogue under the same ideology of formal coherence and technical precision.
