This coffee table, designed and produced in the sixties, is a clear representation of the brutalist style applied to furniture design. Made of melis pine wood combined with green formica, the piece stands out for its strong architectural character, where robustness and functionality are combined with a strong visual presence.
Brutalism, which emerged in architecture during the postwar period and reached its apogee in the 1950s and 1960s, is characterized by the honest exposition of materials and structures, emphasizing formal simplicity and an aesthetic of "strength" that rejects the superfluous. Although Brutalism is commonly associated with exposed concrete in buildings, its principles carried over to furniture as well, where solid, volumetric forms convey a sense of permanence and solidity.
In this table, that brutalist influence is softened by the rounded edges of the top and the warm natural texture of the pine wood, which contrasts with the green formica. This combination strikes a balance between the architectural harshness of brutalism and a cozy feel, bringing the piece closer to domestic settings.
