This ottoman is a magnificent example of French design of the sixties, where structural purity and functionality become protagonists. The piece is articulated on an exposed metal structure of clean lines and flat profile, which generates a cross base of great stability and strong sculptural presence.
The seat, divided into square upholstered modules, introduces a geometric rhythm that dialogues with the severity of the metal. The slight overhang of the upholstery in relation to the frame creates a suspension effect characteristic of the modern design of the period. At the bottom, the web of elastic webbing reveals a technical and honest construction, typical of the advanced industrial design of the 1960s.
The piece was designed by Olivier Mourgue, trained at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and produced by the French firm Airborne. Mourgue achieved international recognition with his iconic Djinn chairs (1965), which became a symbol of "Space Age" design after their appearance in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
