DESCRIPTION
JORDI VILANOVA (Barcelona, 1925-1998).
Chest of drawers, ca. 1970
In walnut, with light wood interiors (probably beech).
Measurements: 81 x 225,5 x 45 cm.
Large-format sideboard that exemplifies the constructive excellence and timeless elegance of 1970s Catalan design. This piece by Jordi Vilanova stands out for the quality of its materials and the purity of its lines.
Made of walnut, with light wood interiors, the piece of furniture combines material-visual nobility and precision craftsmanship. The front is organized by large smooth doors and a side module of drawers, resolved with minimalist cylindrical handles that respect the formal cleanliness of the whole. The warm grain of the walnut, with its sober and continuous pattern, adds depth and sophistication without resorting to superfluous ornamentation.
The elevated structure on stylized prismatic legs visually lightens the volume, creating a perfect balance between strength and lightness.
Jordi Vilanova was a key figure in the renewal of post-war Catalan design. He trained at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona and at Busquets' workshop, later collaborating with Lluís Gili. He was a founder of the magazine Questions d'Art (1967-1974) and an active member of the Colegio Oficial de Decoradores y Diseñadores de Interiores de Barcelona and the SAD. A specialist in children's furniture, he was awarded the Delta de Plata Prize (ADI/FAD, 1964). His work is represented in the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona.
