Table lamp in glazed ceramic by Georges Pelletier, whose aesthetic is part of a sculptural and luminous tradition that strongly marked the French design of the second half of the twentieth century. The work reflects a synthesis between modernism, craftsmanship and the decorative spirit of the sixties and seventies. The cylindrical body, structured in vertical enameled stripes in earthy and black tones, refers to a sober geometric abstraction. Strategically arranged Punctures not only visually lighten the volume, but also allow light to project.
The inlaid metal spheres provide material contrast - the warmth of brass against the ceramic surface - and evoke an almost architectural language, close to the modular and constructive. This combination of manual craftsmanship and sculptural conception is characteristic of Pelletier's work: pieces conceived as design objects, but with the formal forcefulness of a sculpture.
Born in 1938, Pelletier moved to Paris at the age of fifteen. In 1954 he entered the Académie Charpentier to prepare for entry to the École des Métiers d'Art, where he deepened his drawing and artistic training. At the same time, he began his apprenticeship in ceramic sculpture in the workshop of Claude Pantzer, and also came into contact with the environment of the artist Fernand Léger, broadening his sensitivity to form and volume. During his training he collaborated with the Poteries d'Accolay, an important nucleus of ceramic renovation in France. In 1961 he opened his first workshop in Paris. To make himself known, he sold his pieces in the Saint-Ouen market, where he was discovered by a decorator from the firm Roche Bobois (then Bobois), which incorporated his lamps into its catalog until 1973. That same year he moved to Cannes, where he set up a new workshop and continued to produce lamps and sculptures with his son.
His works were exhibited in international galleries in New York, Shanghai, Ibiza, Knokke, Atlanta and Los Angeles, as well as at the Centre d'art contemporain Le Consortium in Dijon.
