Iconic bookcase designed by Óscar Tusquets for BD Ediciones de Diseño, an outstanding example of contemporary Spanish design. The "Hipóstila" model takes its name from classical architecture -the hypostyle rooms supported by columns- transferring this structural concept to the domestic environment.
The piece is composed of vertical uprights that function as structural columns, on which metal shelves with sharp lines and a stylized profile rest. The result is a light, architectural composition with a strong graphic presence, where structure and function are integrated with rationalist clarity.
A modular design conceived to adapt to the space, representative of the refined and architectural language characteristic of Tusquets and the innovative spirit of BD, a key firm in the renewal of Spanish design since the seventies.
Awarded the Delta de Oro in 1980, the Hypostila is represented in collections such as the Vitra Design Museum and continues to be one of the most emblematic and long-lived pieces in the BD catalog.
Óscar Tusquets trained at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona and at the ETSAB. In 1964 he founded Studio PER with Lluís Clotet, with whom he collaborated regularly until 1984. During this period he participated in the enlargement of the Faculty of Medicine in Barcelona (1980) and in the remodeling of the Palau de la Música Catalana (1982). He has been awarded the Delta de Oro del FAD prize on several occasions, and in 1987 he received the Sant Jordi Cross.
